When the time has arrived to redo the roof or siding, picking the right contractor for the project is essential on making your house-dreams come true. There’s a lot of contractors out there that is more than willing to take on the job BUT you still need to scout for the one that suits your needs, understands what you are looking to addresses, prioritizes safety if there’s kids around and is easy to contact if things go wrong or to address any concerns. So these are 8 questions you need to ask before hiring any roofing or siding contractor contractor.
- How long has the construction company been in the business?
This is important because if something goes wrong after the project is finished, you could still call the company to address your concerns and ensure that they could rectify what’s needed. A trustworthy company to hire is a company that has been around for at least 5 years because it shows that they have the workmanship to stay in the business.
TJR Construction has been in the business since 1997, which brings it about to almost 20 years of experience in roofing, siding and gutters.
- Are the construction workers being insured for liability and compensation?
Workers’ compensation insurance is required by law and if a company does not have Workers’ Compensation or a general liability of $1,000,000 minimum, then it would be a wise idea to look for another company that abides the law. This is important because if any of the construction workers gets injured during your project, you won’t be held accountable for its medical fees.
Yes, TJR Construction is.
- What does the construction company specialises in? Does their services meet with your needs?
Get to know their experience in the business because you are putting your house in their hands. Does their renovation/remodelling services include painting, plumbing, electrical etc.? If they answer yes, their renovation/remodelling services include “all phases of construction”, then question them on how often they did painting or plumbing or electrical etc. If they have done a project that includes “all phases of construction” more than twice, the company can be considered but if they are not experienced in either painting or electrical or any phase, then it would be wise to look for a specialized firm that does so.

- How is this project being priced? Is it being priced using specific costing standards? Would you get an itemized quote?
Yes, there are three questions here but it asks specifically about one thing, the price. If the construction company is not giving a specific answer about its costing system then it might be best to look for one that does. A company that doesn’t use standards might charge you higher than supposed to and the company should provide you a spreadsheet of their costing or an itemized quote to ensure your understanding on what you are actually paying for. Without it, be prepared to face unexpected expenses just to get the job done whereby the initial price has been agreed prior starting the job.
A reputable contractor from TJR Construction will measure the cost from the extent of the damage, cost of materials and cost of quality installation but if you are filing an insurance claim and it has been approved, TJR Construction will not charge you a dime for any replacement of damage. Your insurance company will cover the cost with the exception of your deductible.
- When can the construction company start and how long would it take?
Good construction companies out there are busy so your dream-house project might have to wait in line for it to start, so it is essential to ask when they can start remodelling. Also, find out when it’ll end so that you could plan your alternative stay accordingly if needed or just ask so that the contractor is aware that they have to be on schedule to finish the project. Nonetheless, certain things can inevitably delay the project’s completion but the contractor must explain these contingencies beforehand, prior on signing the contract.
TJR Construction will provide you with approximate start and completition dates for all of your roofing, siding or gutter projects.
- Do you have guarantee on the project?
A licensed company usually guarantee their work and provides workmanship for 1 year, so it is important to make sure that the construction company is licensed or not at the brim of bankruptcy in order to get that workmanship guarantee.
- What kind of materials does the construction company will use for the project and why?
Even though you might not be knowledgeable about construction materials but find out about it from the contractor. Ask the right questions such as, “is there a cheaper option that gives out the same function?”, or “is it high-priced because it lasts longer? Does it have better quality?”. Make sure that you are not victimized of higher prices when you can get lower ones that still functions perfectly or by the contractors’ mark-ups on material costs.

- Ask for references
Asking for references is perfectly legal and wise, so that you could talk to people that may have done the same thing you planned on their houses and have their opinion about the hired construction company. If the company is hesitant or not giving any, be suspicious and go look for other construction companies.
